Expertise

As a Las Vegas local, Dr. Petersen is proud to share his expertise with his community

At the University of Utah, Dr. Petersen earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Physiology and a minor in Chemistry.

He attended dental school at the University of Nevada Las Vegas School of Dental Medicine (UNLV-SDM), where he received his Doctorate in Dental Medicine (DMD) and was inducted into the prestigious Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU) National Honor Society.

After working as a general dentist for two years in the Las Vegas community, he pursued his passion for helping people obtain the smile of their dreams by attending a three-year advanced post-doctoral specialty training in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics at UNLV-SDM.

Dr. Petersen earned his Master’s Degree in Oral Biology and has since completed his Orthodontic Board Certification with the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO).

ABO Board Certification

Believe it or not, not all orthodontists have obtained their board certification. In fact, fewer than half of all orthodontists are board-certified.

Achieving board certification is the final step in a long and comprehensive educational journey.

To achieve board certification, an orthodontist like Dr. Petersen must pass a rigorous set of written and clinical exams and a comprehensive review of their credentials, knowledge, and orthodontics skills.

What’s the difference between a dentist and an orthodontist? Orthodontists like Dr. Petersen are dentists who train for an extra two to three years to become specialists in straightening teeth, correcting malocclusions (bad bites), and improving facial esthetics.

Only dentists who successfully complete an accredited orthodontic residency program after dental school are accepted as members of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO).  Our Las Vegas patients can smile knowing they are in the hands of an AAO orthodontic specialist like Dr. Petersen.
