Dr. Petersen and Dr. Grahl do surgical treatments in two phases, pre-surgical and post-surgical orthodontics. In the pre-surgical phase, the teeth are set up in proper positions for surgical facial and bite correction. Then, the surgical phase is completed by our trusted oral surgeon colleagues. Lastly, in the post-surgical phase, after healing from the surgery, we will finalize and dial in your bite and smile to get you finished in the Orthobar Way!

Some surgical procedures we offer in office are laser gingivectomy to level the gingival (gum) heights, temporary anchorage devices (TADS) used for anchorage in complex orthodontic movements, Mini-screw Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion (MARPE).

We use advanced surgical lasers to perform gingivectomies that adjust your gum heights to treat gummy smiles and tooth asymmetries. These dental specific lasers give you precise results with minimal discomfort.

Installing a temporary anchorage device allows us to add a new anchoring point to the jaw for more predictable complex tooth movement. We use these screw-like implants in place of more invasive treatments like headgear and remove them after treatment/movements are complete.

MARPE improves your dental arch without major palatal surgery and is effective in teens and adults with fully developed palates. These temporary implants in the roof of the mouth use gentle pressure to correct expansion skeletal and make space to correct overcrowding.

We have a surgical laser on-site to perform soft tissue surgeries like gum lifts.
Not all of our patients need orthodontic surgery. After your first consultation, you will have a clearer picture of whether surgery is necessary.
Your preparation instructions will depend on the procedure. During a pre-surgery appointment, Dr. Petersen or Dr. Grahl will tell you how to prepare for your surgery.
